It is entirely possible to grow a bird from an egg and keep it in a tiny cage throughout its life. This is highly profitable as small amounts of space can be effectively used, the process of cleaning can be mechanised and the birds diet can be scientificaly controlled. We do not think this is fair on the birds and it is not how we do it.
Our view is that chickens and turkeys should be able to peck worms, take dustbaths, scratch in the shrubs, bask in the sun, ducks and geese should be able to graze on grass, sift the pond for snails, hunt slugs, swim in running water.
You may be able to cram 200 times as many birds onto a farm by making it into a factory and this may make it efficient but we feel our customers value animal welfare more highly and are prepared to pay a small premium for animal welfare, we believe the flavour of our birds and eggs speak for themselves.
